Neurodevelopment

From the prenatal period through adolescence, brain development follows a precise and delicate step-by-step sequence involving complex neurobiological processes. Definitive research shows environmental factors have an important influence on this development.

Research also shows that the overall prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders has increased in recent years. Exposures linked to neurodevelopmental harms include air pollution, lead, mercury, organophosphate pesticides, and plastic chemicals.

CHE shares emerging science linking chemical exposures to neurodevelopmental impacts. In particular, we highlight the work of our colleagues at Project TENDR (Targeting Environmental Neurodevelopmental Risks). We also promote a "better safe than sorry" precautionary approach when dealing with chemicals that may harm child brain development. Both individual actions and protective public policies are needed to safeguard individuals and families.
