8 Feb Credibility key in 9/11 health trials. As the first cases in a massive battle over illnesses linked to 9/11 near trial, an Associated Press investigation has found that several of the initial 30 suits contain inconsistent or exaggerated claims about how the workers got sick or how much time they spent at ground zero. 8 Feb Alarm raised over mercury dump near Durban. Toxic mercury sludge has been sitting in huge government dumping pits outside Durban for the past 20 years - unfenced, uncovered and with no protective lining to stop the poison seeping into the earth. Durban Sunday Tribune.

8 Feb Birth defects plague tiny California town. Born with multiple facial deformities and missing part of his brain, Emmanuel is one of several children to have been born with severe birth defects in Kettleman City, Calif. ABC News.

State and federal officials are scrambling to determine what caused the deaths of three children in this Central California farming town, which shares a ZIP code with the largest hazardous waste treatment site west of the Mississippi. 7 Feb Toxic trinkets. Cadmium, a carcinogenic heavy metal, has surfaced as the latest villain lurking in the kids' toy and jewelry aisles. Montgomery Advertiser.

Initiative on
Children's Environmental Health

The Initiative on Children's Environmental Health – formerly the Institute for Children's Environmental Health – is now an active working group of the Collaborative on Health and the Environment. ICEH is devoted to the promotion of children's health and the prevention of environmental exposures and other factors that may undermine healthy development.

Conference Highlights: Translating Science to Policy: Protecting Children's Environmental Health.
This document from the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health summarizes the March 2009 symposium which reviewed 10 years of research findings from the Center and other scientists, discussed interventions stemming from this research, and identified strategies to advance policies that will reduce and prevent environmentally-related diseases such as asthma, developmental disorders and cancer in children living in urban communities. New Resource: Climate Change and Children's Health, December 2009. With several recent reports and statements regarding the impact of climate change on health, the Initiative on Children's Environmental Health is pleased to provide a new resource page on Climate Change and Children's Health. This page lays out why children are especially vulnerable, what health impacts may be caused or exacerbated by climate change, and actions that we can take as individuals and as groups. A resources section also links to additional information. This new resource will be updated as new information becomes available.

ICEH Merges with CHE, May 2009. The Institute for Children's Environmental Health has become a working group of CHE and moved its resource-rich website onto the CHE site. Now the Initiative on Children's Environmental Health, ICEH will continue to provide resources and services, including the email bulletins that it had been publishing for the Partnership for Children's Environmental Health.
