Open Evening….

Special Event, open to Summit participants and the public

Film Screening:  The Beloved Community
A film by Pamela Calvert/Plain Speech; A presentation of Detroit Public Television
7:30 pm reception, 8:00 pm screening at the Delancey Street Screening Room, 600 Embarcadero (between Bryant and Brannan), San Francisco

In the summer of 2004, Canadian health researchers made a startling discovery in the Aamjiwnaang (Chippewa) birth records for the city of Sarnia, an hour north of Detroit:  For the past decade, girl babies had been outnumbering boys at a rate of 2:1. Further investigation revealed large numbers of miscarriages, a cluster of reproductive cancers in young women, and widespread neurological problems among the band's children. The Beloved Community looks at a Great Lakes oil town facing a toxic legacy head-on.

This screening is a presentation of the UCSF-CHE Summit, and is co-sponsored by Literacy for Environmental Justice and Pesticide Action Network. Admission is free; seating is limited.
Special Guest: Ronald Plain, Environment Committee, Aamjiwnaang First Nation.

Summit participants gather in 5 smaller topic-based groups to digest/discuss the implications of the science and issues raised during the, and to outline potential agendas, collaborative initiatives, or other “next steps.” Groups will be led by advance-prepared co-leaders, who will be responsible for composing a written summary of their breakout group discussion and conclusions immediately following the Summit. UCSF’s Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment may coordinate working groups and collaborative initiatives that are inspired by or shaped in breakout groups, as appropriate.

How do they decide what to communicate about? What do health professionals need in order to translate current evidence to the clinic?
Leaders: Mark Miller, MD; Julia Quint, PhD

  2. Critical research directions and collaborations: What are the most critical research directions/tools this meeting has identified? What are key research areas that basic scientists and epidemiologists, clinical researchers, and patient/community representatives might work on together? (What key questions would such research efforts address?)
Leaders: Andrea C. Gore, PhD; Sarah J. Janssen, MD, PhD, MPH

  3. Identifying policy priorities: What are the priority areas that can be pursued through the policy process? What are important next steps in addressing policy needs?
